Contemplating Death

Contemplating Death

Contemplating Death is a two-hour experience that will include a guided meditation, journaling, and group discussion, in mindful contemplation of the sacred transition of one’s own death. This will be focused not on the medical, financial, or legal aspects of preparing for death, but on the ceremonial, ritual, remembrance, and legacy aspects. The objective is to gain an idea of your preferences and decisions around the following -

  • What do I want to happen to my body?

  • What kind of funeral or memorial service would I like?

  • What does that service look like?

  • Who is giving my eulogy?

  • Who has written my obituary?

  • Do I want to write either of those things myself?

  • What music do I want included?

  • What ceremonies or rituals?

  • Do I want particular flowers or plants?

  • What religious or cultural aspects do I want honored?

  • What is my legacy?

This will likely bring up emotions, including grief at the anticipation of dying, which is totally normal and will be held with compassion and care by your facilitators, Marti Steger & Beth Leyba.

Please bring a journal or notebook, pen, water bottle, a yoga mat and bolster if you have them, and wear comfortable clothing. We will have multiple seated or lying options available for different ability and mobility levels, so that everyone will be comfortable and fully supported during the guided meditation. North Denver Death Café

The North Denver Death Café is a free monthly event where the community can gather and talk about death and dying. We have an open format without a specific agenda, topic, questions, or speakers. While discussions about grief are certainly welcome, please remember Death Café is not a grief support group. We hope to normalize discussions around death and dying as we celebrate the richness of living. Join us for a lively chat about death.

There is no cost to participate. Everyone is welcome.

Smiley Branch Library 4501 W. 46th Avenue, Denver 80212. The library is wheelchair accessible and has an elevator.

This event is not sponsored by Denver Public Library. Please contact the event hosts, Beth Leyba or Marti Steger, with any questions.
